Tottenville High School is located at 100 Luten Avenue, in Huguenot, Staten Island, New York. Tottenville H.S. is in Administrative District 31. The school’s current principal is Joseph Scarmato. The school is operated by the New York City Department of Education. Tottenville HS is within walking distance of the Huguenot station of the Staten Island Railway system. ==History== Tottenville High School was established in 1898. The school’s first principal was Nathan J. Lowe. Tottenville High School was originally located in the building now home to Totten Intermediate Junior High School (I.S. 34). In 1972, the school moved to its current location in Huguenot. Dr. Mary E. Meade was the first woman principal of a NYC co-educational school (1938–1944). In November 1987, Tottenville was selected as a “School of Excellence” by the U.S. Department of Education. John P. Tuminaro was principal beginning in 1999, until his retirement in June 2013. The student population is approximately 3,875. Tottenville High School offers Regents level classes in Algebra, Algebra II & Trigonometry, American History, Chemistry, Earth Science, English, Geometry, Global History, Italian, Living Environment, Physics & Spanish. Tottenville also offers CTE (Career and Technical Education) courses in Dental Tech, Medical Technology, and CISCO networking academy. Over 1000 students are enrolled in eight federally fund, Career and Technical Education programs since 1991 that combine college and career preparation for the 21st Century. Programs are endorsed and approved by the New York State Education Department and involve a collaboration with business, colleges and universities with highly trained professionals with licenses in teaching and trained in their professions. The eight programs that exists are: Medical Laboratory and Assisting Program in Biotechnology and Microbiology, Dental Laboratory and Assisting Program, CISCO Academy, Culinary Arts, Automotive Technologies, Finance Academy,E-commerce/ Marketing OVEA, and Law Academy. Students have opportunies for paid internships with professional mentors, advanced post-secondary certifications, and college credit. The flexible curriculum is designed by the teacher according to academic and professional 21st-Century, workplace standards. Students learn in professional environments, like the state-of-the-art, biotechnology and dental laboratories, automotive shops, business centers, and computer network laboratories. Equipment for students is purchased through Perkins'VETA grants or donated by industry. Collaborators include:the College of Staten Island, CUNY, Cobleskill, SUNY, Brookdale Community College, City Technical College, CUNY, Bio-Rad Laboratories, Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, National Science Resources Center of the Smithsonian and many more. Advanced Placement Classes offered at Tottenville include: U.S. History, Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, English Literature & Composition, Physics 1, Psychology and U.S. Government & Politics. Upon entry to Tottenville High School, it is required that every student swipe their ID Card through the CAAS scanning system. College Credit Classes (from St. John’s University) include: College Pre-Calculus and foreign language courses. Paul Zindel, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and novelist Paul Zindel taught science from 1959–1969. In the mid-1990s, Tottenville High School received twin murals titled Ancient and Modern Commerce (1918 A.J. Bogdanove) which were removed from Paul Robeson HS and restored. The murals can be seen in the Concert Hall. In 2006, scenes for ''Little Children''; starring Kate Winslet, Jennifer Connelly and Patrick Wilson were filmed at the school and on the football field.
